Cristy Mateo a woman from new york is taken on the health department to keep her pet pig Wilbur at home. He has been with Cristy now for five years. Wilbur is an emotional support animal that is registered and provides support to her and her father. Recently someone in her building contacted the health department and complained that she was breaking the law by unlawfully harboring a wild animal and that Wilbur had to go. This is not Mateo's first time in court over Wilbur, her first battle in court she won with the case being dismissed. Soon after the complaint was filed with the health department, a spokesperson says "the health code prohibits pigs to be kept in NYC. In 2009, the Board of Health reaffirmed that pigs should be on the list of prohibited animals because there is no USDA-approved rabies vaccine for pigs." Now Mateo is hoping a bill that is being sponsored by state senator Tony Avella will quickly pass which will legalize pigs as pets as long as they are under 200 pounds. Mateo is hopeful and we will be keeping an eye on this story as it develops.
